A Poem for Albert Lee Shutting Doors

Shutting Doors

He walks with confidence in life,
He has done well and knows no strife.
He’s young and strong and filled with faith.
He marches off with a soldier’s haste.

I wish he had run,
I wish he had left; but now his body is still in death.
A flag is folded and a mother cries
Another son of God has died.

A young girl by the altar weeps.
His father is not able to sleep.
Then as we by his coffin pass;
A red rose on the floor is cast.

The church is filled with broken hearts,
And then the final music starts.
We leave the church and drive away,
We have to live another day.

He was my kin; he was my friend,
My thoughts of him will never end.
He died so that we could be free,
But I would give my life to see,
A smile upon his face once more!

It’s funny how God shuts our doors…
