My Childhood Hero
Posted for: RICHARD DENNIS ATOR:
Richard Dennis Ator whoom I knew as "Buck", was a childhood idol. Growing up in rural Moses Lake, Washington, he was everything to a young kid like myself. He was always available, was a sports hero and a genuine nice person.
I lost track of him but saw him one more time at Ft. Benning, Ga. He was a Captain and the commander of the defense forces at a demo called the defense of ple bin or as we lovingly called it. The Mad Minute.
I tried to contact him but was unable to make it happen. This was in April or May of 1967.
I was myself sent overseas and was saddened to learn years later that Buck made the ultimate sacrafice.
I see him still as he kissed the homecoming queen in 1955. He will always be a hero to me.
