Mother's Day at The Wall

The Mother's Day at The Wall ceremony is an important event for the nation and the families of our veterans. The ceremony allows us to remember and honor those who have given their lives to our nation's defense as well as recognize the sacrifices of the loved ones — in particular the mothers — they left behind.

Throughout the 1960s and 70s, countless American mothers watched as their sons and daughters marched off to fight a war in a foreign land. Thousands of these women lost their children to the Vietnam War. And while the pain of that loss is always with them, Mother's Day is a particularly difficult time for these women.

Each year, the Memorial Fund honors them by asking teachers and students to make Mother's Day cards to be read by some of these moms at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Mother's Day. After reading the cards, the mothers process to The Wall and lay the cards at its base.
