Frank Millen SVC Committee City of Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremonies The City of Smyrna will observe Memorial Day with traditional ceremonies on Monday, May 30th, 2011. The Memorial Service will be held at Smyrna s Veterans Memorial Park on King Street across Bank Street from Smyrna City Hall. Public seating will begin at 9:00 am assisted by ROTC cadets from Campbell High School, and the formal ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 am. The Memorial Ceremony will include the presentation of the colors and rifle salute by the Honor Guard of the 94th Airlift Wing, USAF Reserve Command from Dobbins Air Reserve Base, laying of the Memorial Wreaths, and distinguished guest speakers. Music for the ceremony will be provided by the 116th Army Band, Georgia Army National Guard. The memorial ceremony will conclude at 11:00 am. The ceremony is sponsored and coordinated by the Smyrna Veterans Committee, an organization composed of the City of Smyrna, The Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, and American Legion Post 160. The ceremony is a public event and all are cordially invited to attend and participate in this memorial service to honor those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Smyrna Community Center. Public parking, including handicapped-accessible parking, is available at either site. The speakers for this year s ceremony are U.S. Army COL (Ret.) Michael D. Steele, a Georgia native and veteran of numerous overseas deployments, and The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Certain, also a Georgian, Vietnam Veteran, and former POW. Biographies for these distinguished veterans are included below. After ceremonies are completed at 11:00, there will be an impressive array of activities for the public. They include numerous static displays of military hardware and public safety equipment on and around the traffic circle in front of the Community Center. A medley of patriotic music will be performed by the 116th Army Band, Georgia Army National Guard, followed by a one hour concert performed by the Tara Winds Orchestra with appropriate music selections from composers ranging from John Philip Sousa to George Gershwin to Glen Miller. Atkins Park restaurant, in Smyrna's Market Village, will have their mobile kitchen near the Memorial Park to offer either a pork barbecue sandwich, roasted turkey wrap, or all beef hot dog, each with a choice of chips or macaroni salad, for $5.00, drinks extra, so you can picnic while enjoying the concert. There will be more than a dozen equipment displays, demonstrations, and tours located on or near the traffic circle including: An UH-72 Lakota scout helicopter and UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter ( both flown in) with tours by their crews A Smyrna firetruck and A Smyrna Rescue Vehicle on display A weapons, equipment, and vehicle display by the 94th Airlift Wing security detachment from the Dobbins Air Force Reserve base. A display of equipment, vehicles, and bomb disposal techniques by the Dobbins ARB EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal, e.g., bomb squad) Detachment. Restored WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War vintage vehicles with their assorted armaments A simulated rock climbing wall with soldiers supervising (so the kids can climb safely) Other displays of equipment with tours The principal guest speakers for the Memorial Service will be: Colonel Michael D. Steele -- Mike Steele was raised in north Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia where he earned a Bachelor s Degree in Sociology. At Georgia he was an offensive guard for the Bulldogs, a team that won three Southeastern Conference Championships and the 1980 National Championship. COL Steele was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1983, and has been assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, the 25th Infantry Division, the 82d Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division, and the 75th Ranger Regiment, serving in a variety of leadership and staff positions. His combat and operational deployments are numerous and include: as a Ranger Company Commander operating in Somalia during the Blackhawk Down incident; as the Operations Officer of an airborne battalion deployed to secure the Panama Canal; as a Battalion Commander deploying his Battalion to Bosnia; as a Division Operations Officer deploying with the 10th Mountain Division to Afghanistan; and as a Brigade Commander deploying his Brigade to Iraq. In 2009, Mike founded The Faces of Freedom, a support organization that assists Georgia veterans who have been wounded in combat operations, as well as educates the citizenry and elected officials of Georgia as to the challenges of returning wounded veterans. Mike has two Master s degrees: one in Administration from Central Michigan University and one in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Certain Robert Certain was born in Savannah, Georgia in December 1947. An alumnus of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Maryland, he attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, graduating in 1969 with a BA degree in History and a commission in the US Air Force. As a combat aviator he flew 100 missions over Southeast Asia in 1971 and 1972. He was shot down and captured in December 1972; and repatriated when the war ended a few months later. Following the Vietnam War, he attended the School of Theology, an Episcopal Church seminary in Sewanee, Tennessee, and was ordained as a priest in 1976 after he received his Master of Divinity degree. In 1990, he was awarded his Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Theology. In his capacity as a military chaplain, he served as a chaplain in the Air Force on active duty and in the reserves. As a reservist he served as chaplain to the Air Force in various locations, including basic military training, at the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command and Air Mobility Command, and at the Air Force Academy. He also is a graduate of the Air War College. He retired from the Air Force Reserves in 1999 at the rank of Colonel. Father Certain has served parishes in Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arizona and California, and is now serving as Rector of St. Peter & St. Paul Episcopal Church in Marietta GA. He also serves on the Defense Health Board, on the committees on psychological health and medical ethics and on the task force for prevention of suicide in the armed forces. Robert published his autobiography, Unchained Eagle: From Prisoner of War to Prisoner of Christ in 2003. Another book, The Spiritual Quest, was published in 2008. When former President Gerald R. Ford died in late 2006, Father Certain was chosen to lead all the memorial services and to preside at his burial ceremony in Michigan. 30 MAY 2011 MEMORIAL DAY Keep it moving, please, even if you've seen it before. “I will remember Larry Olbricht. My friend Larry, was one heck of man. Been through combat, Vietnam. 3 tours of duty. Most of it, behind enemy lines. Decoraded, wounded. He asked to go back for 4th tour. The Army refused, he was discharged, and he couldn't get help from the(VA). Because he couldn't tell them, how he got his combat wounds. He, was a hero, and our country left him high and dry. My prayer, is our country, allow our forgotten hero's, their just reward. Men, of special ops, risk their lives, so others can be spared. Billy lived in my neighborhood in CT as a child.He was killed in Vietnam on 7-16-1966 at the age of 19.He was shot by a sniper one day before he was due to rotate out of Vietnam. He was an only child and is buried with his parents near my grandmother and some more of my relatives in Pawcatuck, CT. “I will remember Rufus Edwards. Rufus was a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War. We met just about 10 years ago when we moved into his neighborhood. We got to be good friends over the years but only talked a few times about our experiences in Vietnam. Before I would introduce Rufus to a friend I would prepare them by telling them that they were about to meet the real "John Wayne" not the actor, but the real thing. Rufus stood about 6'2" or more and was well built even for his age of 67 when he had heart problems and died. He never once complained and hunted all his life. “I will remember George Washington Froe. George and I served in the same unit in Vietnam. That was "A" Btry 8th & 6th Arty. We were in the 3rd Division "Iron Brigade" First Infantry Division stationed in Lai-Khe. George was a "Gun-Bunny" and I was in the "Motor Pool". George was KIA two weeks before his 20th birthday in Tay Ninh Provence. George was a well liked easy going soul who became friends with many of guys in the unit. We had many interesting conversations covering a multitude of topics. “I will remember Francis P. Jelinek. My husband Francis(Frank) P. Jelinek (14E-92) was wounded on January 26, 1967 by sniper fire while disarming a mine. He was shot nine times, he survived, but died of his injuries on June 23, l993. He was a perfect husband and wonderful father. We miss him everyday of our lives. I cherish all the memories of the life we shared. He was never bitter and always said he would do it all again. He loved the Army and his country and was very proud to have served. He is my personal Hero, not only for his service to our country, but the way he lived his life after. Enduring many surgeries and daily pain without complaining. “I will remember Alfred Ramirez. SGM Alfred Ramirez, who served his country proudly for 35 years. He loved the army he loved jumping out of planes with the 82nd, 101st and 173rd airborne divisions. He was proud of being a member/coach of the Army Marksmanship Unit in Ft. Benning, GA. My dad served 1 tour in Korea and 2 tours in Vietnam. He survived all three combat tours or so we thought. Somewhere in the jungles of Vietnam he came home with a deadly carcinogen that went by the name of Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia. The battle with cancer he lost. On May 10th 1968 as a member of Company C, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, AKA "Bandito Charlie" my brother, PFC Richard Javier Flores was killed in action along with 3 members of his unit in support of ARVN Troops at the village of Xom Tan Liem, just south of Saigon. For the heroic action that my brother took in the defense of the village, and for the lives he helped to save, he was awarded the Bronze Star medal for Valor posthumously and promoted to the rank of Corporal. My brother made the ultimate sacrifice for Our Nation, along with more than 58,000 other Heroes for Freedom and other principles that he believed in. David was my little brother who was killed in action on hill 861 overlooking Khe Sanh Combat base in Vietnam.David was an asst machine gunner in the 3rd platoon of K co. 26th marines.
