THOUSANDS OF HOLIDAY CARDS FOR ACTIVE-DUTY MILITARY, VETERANS TO BE DISPLAYED AT VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL

Active-duty military who recently served in Operation Iraqi Freedom also are expected to participate.
WHAT: A Holiday Tree decorated with thousands of holiday cards for veterans and active-duty military will be displayed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
WHEN: Monday, December 22, 2003 at 10 a.m.
WHERE: Vietnam Veterans Memorial (21st Street & Constitution Avenue)
Brief remarks will take place at the East Knoll before the Holiday Tree is placed at The Wall’s apex.
WHY: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund receives thousands of holiday cards each December to be placed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Individuals from across the nation include personal messages to honor and remember those who served during the Vietnam War as well as those currently serving overseas.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the most visited memorial in the nation’s capital with more than four million visitors each year. It is dedicated to all who served with U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War and its black granite panels are inscribed with the names of the 58,235 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the non-profit organization authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Today, through a series of outreach programs, the organization works to preserve the legacy of The Wall, to promote healing and to educate about the impact of the Vietnam War.
