MOTHERS TO RECEIVE HANDMADE MOTHER’S DAY CARDS
AT VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL
A Tribute to Mothers of Those Killed and Those Who Served
Sunday, May 9 at 9 AM
WHO: Mothers whose children served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and other military conflicts will be honored with handmade Mother’s Day cards, made by area students for the occasion, at the Fifth Annual Mother’s Day at The Wall, sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
Members of the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital will present some of the cards to nearly 30 representatives of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. and American War Mothers, dressed in official regalia, who will read them aloud and then place them along the base of the Memorial. National President of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Ann Sherman Wolcott, whose son’s name, Rex Marcel Sherman, is inscribed on The Wall, will speak at the event and Jan C. Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
WHAT: Fifth Annual Mother’s Day at The Wall
WHEN: Sunday, May 9, 2004, at 9 AM
WHERE: Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington, D.C.
WHY: Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, countless American mothers watched their sons and daughters march off to war in a foreign land, thousands of whom never returned. Mother’s Day continues to be a difficult time for these women. The Mother’s Day at The Wall ceremony gives us an opportunity to remember and honor all those who have given, and continue to give, their lives for our country; and to recognize the sacrifices of the loved ones they left behind.
BACKGROUND: Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is the non-profit organization authorized by Congress to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Today, it has developed a series of outreach programs dedicated to preserving the legacy of The Wall, to promoting healing and to educating about the impact of the Vietnam War.
