Leadership

In 1979, Jan C. Scruggs conceived the idea of building a memorial in Washington, D.C. honoring all who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War. Using $2,800 of his own money, he launched the effort that culminated in the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, “The Wall,” in 1982.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund was incorporated in 1979 to build the Memorial, but has since expanded its mission to include: preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. Many of the eight members of VVMF’s Board of Directors have been with the organization from the beginning.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Corporate Council was created to give VVMF the benefit of the insight and experience of corporate leaders, members of Congress and Vietnam veterans around the country. The Corporate Council meets yearly and provides input on many VVMF programs and initiatives.
